"The 1982 Polish film was released in 1987, when Communist censorship restrictions relaxed in Poland. This highly acclaimed film in the dramatic and striking story of an impoverished, widowed mother and the ruthless political oppression that effected her life and family during the worst times of Poland's history; World War II, followed by the harsh rule of Stalin. Filmed in black-and-white, to incorporate actual newsreel footage from the times, the film won the Grand Prize at the 1988 Gdansk Festival".
